Ealing
Arts + Leisure
February 2010
Dear Ealing Resident
Ealing Arts + Leisure has been working during 2009 on a
project to establish an Arts and Leisure Centre in the
Ealing Arts + Leisure, a long-established registered arts
charity with 90 arts and leisure groups, is well geared up to do this work. We
have now got support in principle for the Arts Centre from all three political
parties that make up Ealing Council.
The project is briefly outlined as follows :
·
A converted Town Hall
could house many arts facilities, including studios for music, recording,
art and dance, with multi-purpose rooms for crafts,
teaching, talks and meetings. Victoria Hall needs upgrading
into a flexible space for concerts, films, conferences & general
performance use.
·
Under the stewardship of
an Ealing Arts Board, independent of the Council, the Centre would be run by
professional arts administrators and would be available to local clubs and
societies. It would engage with other
organisations such as TVU, Ealing Studios,
·
A central idea is to
encourage people of all ages to take up and/or further their interests in
music, dance, sport and other cultural activities. Providing specific
interests for young people must be a principal objective for such a Centre.
A feasibility study is under way into the use of some rooms
of the town hall as music studios. The study is assessing the demand for
spaces, examining how best to manage the project and analysing its financial
viability.
After this study we will do two more studies into dance and
art. Rooms have been identified for
these activities and the next stage will be to get a leasing agreement with the
Council.
Throughout this process, to date and in the future, we are
being advised by top professionals who have a wealth of experience in setting
up arts centres.
We recently held a meeting with arts groups which have
expressed an interest in using the spaces in the Art Centre/Town Hall. These groups represented music, dance,
theatre, song, visual arts, literature/spoken word and
experts on music studios were also present.
We are still in very early stages but we are aware of the need
eventually to provide for photography/video, IT, crafts, performance spaces,
classes, talks, lectures and meetings.
We will shortly organise another meeting with the community
to assess what facilities other interest groups and individuals will need etc.
So, the ball is rolling ! Please pass the word around. We are
still receiving pledges of support. So far we nudging 400 signatures, but
would welcome more This display of public support is vital for the success of
the project. Please contact us if your group would like to use a space, or even
set up home in the Arts Centre
